13 Nights of Halloween – Night 13

Happy Halloween, y’all!! On this final night of the 13 Nights of Halloween, I bring you a special treat: cherry hand pies! These spooky treats are hand shaped hand pies based on my grandma Bray’s delicious cherry pie recipe. You can make your own dough or you can get store bought (store bought is WAY easier, tbh).

Spooky Cherry Hand Pies

Servings 3 pies

Ingredients

  • 2 crust pie dough
  • cup tart cherries
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 split almond extract
  • 20 almond slices
  • 1 egg
  • coarse sugar for topping

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425°F
  • Combine cherries, flour, sugar and almond extract in small bowl
  • Roll out pie dough and use paring knife to cut out shape of hand – the easiest way to do this is trace your hand (carefully!!) with the knife then keep tracing the first pie dough hand
  • Fill center of hand with pie filling – don't add too much or your hand will bleed (unless you are going for this extra spooky effect)
  • Beat egg then use pastry brush to go around edges of bottom hand
  • Top with another hand cut out and press down edges with fork
  • Repeat process until you run out of dough – you should get 2-3 hands out of the two pie crusts
  • Brush top of hands with egg, place almond finger nails at fingertips and then sprinkle with coarse sugar
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until hands start to brown
